Stephen Lloyd-Moffett

Having invited over a hundred speakers in the past four years as part of my position advising the Religious Studies program at our university, I can say that no speaker has received more favorable comments afterwards than Heather Mendel. Her talks are always insightful, often humorous, and never boring. She is warmly and wonderfully iconoclastic, with perspectives that even those of us with academic training find novel and challenging. She speaks profoundly from her unique perspective as a feminist woman, as a South African-American, and as a modern Jew. She has spoken on diverse topics such as Jewish mysticism, Biblical interpretation, feminist theology, race relations, interfaith dialogue, and contemporary Judaism. In each case, she brought contagious energy to the process of searching for answers to the questions that our students and community care most about. As a result, Heather Mendel has emerged as one of the most popular and sought-after speakers on the campus of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Any audience will benefit greatly from the opportunity to hear her speak.

I would like to thank you for your inspirational presentation last week to my class. The students were very appreciative, and felt that not only had they learned a number of new approaches to thinking about Judaism and feminism, but they were moved by your presentation. You are able to mix a fascinating personal background with sound research and information about Judaism from a new perspective. You are a poised, experienced, and expressive speaker. You demonstrate a great depth of understanding about your area, and are able to communicate it in a very effective manner. I personally learned a lot from your presentation, and it also encouraged me to learn more. I would be very happy to recommend you to anyone interested in Judaism and feminism.

I had the pleasure of hearing the keynote address given by Heather at the Emeritus Program Dinner at Cuesta College in 2007. She gave a fascinating and inspiring presentation entitled Living The Life Unseen. She is animated, articulate and wonderful to listen to. I would highly recommend her as a speaker for any group.

I have read your book and am profoundly grateful to have the words you have written as part of my spiritual journey. You have been able to pull aside the veil (Maya) and allowed the ultimate mystery of being one with our co-creator as part of our journey here on this challenging physical plane. I love how you define Judaism and find the following words you wrote,”The eternal sparks are the same; the fire is one.”, to be profound and true. They remind me of when I first read Teilhard de Chardin when I was 15. I was compelled to let you know that you have written a book that will now become one of my favorites.

I can’t tell you how much I am enjoying your book. I have many friends who are buying it because of my excitement. You did a wonderful job on it and I most enjoy hearing your comments that are so you. I was just selected to be the Special Honoree for the American Cancer Society for this year and in reading your book I understood so much more about my heritage and what about it contributed to who I am.

I have had the pleasure of attending many classes, seminars and feminine spiritual gatherings offered by Heather over the past 6 years, which have been instrumental in my spiritual growth and deep love of Judaism. I have witnessed her insight, wisdom, gifts, experience and eloquence. I have learned much from her because she not only is extremely knowledgeable and always well prepared, but intuitively knows how to present information and solicit those attending to participate, share and discover new vistas for personal and spiritual enlightenment.

I have started reading Dancing In The Footsteps of Eve. It is not a fast read because it gives me so much to think about and digest. I am learning much that is new, especially about your religion, and re-thinking many things about my own. Many of your ideas are feelings I have had for a long time and others are an entirely new way of thinking about things, but both are making me grow both intellectually and religiously. Thank you for this book.
