Recently a respected friend mentioned the ancient art of scrying— the practice of looking into a translucent and reflective material in order to see beyond the limits of normal sight as one enters a portal to consciousness itself. The practice may have begun by looking into a bowl of water or a crystal ball. The web has suggestions about making or purchasing a scrying mirror— a blackened surface into which one can gaze. It seems to me that an iPad or iPhone screen, once the functions are switched off, may offer the perfect dark surface to soft-gaze a pathway into visionary experience. What would Steve Jobs feel about his inventions that have revolutionized the external world, now being used to lead us into our own inner landscape? Perhaps these digital gadgets have the portent of opening us into communication with deeper mystery and truth than was ever thought possible.
